Llud and Llevelys

King Beli of Britain had four sons: Lludd, Casswallawn, Nynnyaw and Llevelys [Hleeth, Cass-wah-hlawn, Nyn-yow and Hlev-ell-ees]. They were all very fine fellows, but this story is about just two of them.

Lludd, the eldest, ruled Britain after his father died. He was a strong king and a brave fighter. He built stone walls around London, his favourite city, and constructed many splendid palaces. You could see their tall towers, with bright flags fluttering in the breeze, from many miles away.

Lludd was friendly and generous – good things for a king to be. He helped the poor, protected the weak, and loved feasting. The country and its people grew rich during his reign – that is, until the trouble started.

But before you read on, you should know that King Lludd’s best friend in the world was Llevelys, his youngest brother.

Llevelys had married a French princess, and was the King of France, across the sea. Although he lived so far away, he still loved hearing stories about Britain.

Then, one day, the stories stopped. Weeks passed, then years, and still Llevelys received no news. No panting couriers arrived on horseback, no dusty messengers on foot. Not even the odd magic bird carrying secret letters over the water.

Without exactly knowing why, Levelys felt very worried.
